Saint Joseph was billed as the patron saint of real estate and therefore the burying of a St. Joseph statue is a traditional and popular practice people often resort to when trying to sell a house. The practice involves planting a small St. Joseph statue, upside down, in the lawn or garden of the home while simultaneously asking for some divine intervention.
As Saint Joseph was also considered a model for fatherhood, he is often depicted affectionately holding a small child.
